Dominoes' roots can be traced way back in time to China during the 12th century, although some historians argue that it might have been invented later than that. Additionally, some argue that the oldest known game of Dominoes was discovered in King Tutankhamen's tomb, among the ruins of Thebes.Tutankhamen was king of ancient Egypt in the 18th dynasty, 1355 BC. Several centuries later around the 16th century, dominoes eventually found their way to Europe and in fact, the word, "dominoes" is most likely a derivative from the latin word "dominus" meaning "master of the house." By the 18th century, the French were playing very popular puzzle games using dominoes.
And then, Dominoes made their way to England, possibly via the French prisoners of war. Its popularity didn't stop there and has reached all corners of the world, but seem to remain extremely popular in Latin America.Dominoes are small tiles made of bone or ivory, much like the tiles in the game of Mahjong but with dot markings called, "pips" that represent numbers. The tiles of dominoes are called "bones," "tiles," or "stones." There are so many different kinds of Dominoes games but the most popular games seem to fall into three categories:
1. Block Games: The goal of these games is to discard of all of your tiles/bones or block all your opponents from playing any of their tiles/bones;
2. Point Games: Being very similar to block games, Point games put an addition spin by adding goal of scoring points as tiles/bones are laid;
3. Match Games: Match games very much resemble the card game, "Rummy" and card games of that sort. The goal is to form sets of bones that may be laid aside and scored when all bones have been placed on the table.
Specific names of Dominoes games include: 42, Bergen, Castle Rock Solitaire, The Chickenfoot Game, Five-Up (aka Muggins or just Dominoes), Flower & Scorpion, Nos, Trains (Basic and Mexican), among many others. |
